Well before we put Adsense on your site, I think it’s only fair for me to explain what exactly Adsense is. It’s is a program owned and operated by Google that allows website owners like yourself to place ads on your page. The way it works is, advertisers want their ads to be seen and clicked on by as many people as possible, so they come to an agreement with Google to pay Google a set amount of money for each time their advertisement is ‘clicked’ by a user. Now, Google places these advertisements on their own search results as seen below:

Adwords

See the ‘Sponsored Links’ on the right side of the Google Search results for the search ‘Free Games’? Those are Ads, and the people that own those particular websites are paying Google every time someone clicks on them. The sponsored links are ALWAYS relevant to the search term, so if you search something like Ipods on Google, the ads on the right side will be about Ipods. If i were to click on that ad on the right side of the picture for ‘Play Free Games’, it would cost Pogo.com [The sponsor of that ad] a few pennies and Google would make a few pennies in revenue. Now Adsense operates in almost the exact same fashion as the advertisments that appear in Google searches, but instead, Advertisers are paying Google to display their ads across all sorts of websites rather than just the Google search results. Now since Google wants to make money, they need to find Website owners that are willing to place these sorts of ads on their web page and in exchange they are willing to split the money that the advertiser is paying them. Basically, Google attracts advertisers and they pay you, the website owner, for putting the ads on your page. Now this makes a lot of sense for both parties, because you, the small website owner have no place trying to negotiate advertisment deals with big companies like CBS and Microsoft, because they wouldn’t even talk to you, but Google on the other hand, can land all the big deals and then allow small all their Adsense members to place those ads on their webpages.

The way Adsense works is that all Advertisers pay Google ‘Per Click’, which means that everyone somebody moves their cusor over an advertisment on your page and clicks on it, Google makes money, and so do you. You can easily view your daily earnings by logging into your Adsense account, but you ‘per click’ earnings will ultimately be determined by what sort of topic your website is about. Websites about ‘Wallpapers’ and ‘Free Games’ don’t tend to earn a lot of money per click, because the advertisers aren’t willing to pay more than a few pennies for each click because they don’t feel that they can make money from people interested in stuff like ‘Wallpapers’ and ‘Free Games’, while on the other hand advertisments about ‘Mortgages’ and ‘Laser Eye Surgery’  can yield over a dollar per click at times. Before you start smacking yourself in the head for not creating a website about these ‘high paying’ topics, the fact is that because these pay so well, they also tend to have an incredible amount of competition. The actual ads that appear on your website are ‘contextual’, which means that based on the content of your site, Google will automatically place Ads that match your sites content.

Okay, at this point you should have a somewhat clear understanding of what exactly Adsense is. Even if you’re clueless at this point about it, it doesn’t really matter because even if you don’t understand how the program works, as long as you follow this guide and set up the ads correctly, you’ll be earning money in no time!
