Okay Now that you signed up for Adsense and know what it is, we’re going to actually place some of those ads on your website now. Okay, Remember how you downloaded and uploaded that new Wordpress theme ‘Bluesense’? We’re going to need to make some minor edits to it now, as the ads currently in the theme aren’t yours, and we need to replace the placeholder ads built into the theme with YOUR ads, so you can earn money.

Okay so now lets go grab the appropriate Ad code from Adsense for your site. Log in to your Adsense account at http://adsense.com then go click ‘Adsense Setup’ at the top navigation area then select “Adsense for Content’ and then make sure you have Ad Unit selected and set it as ‘Text Ads Only’. When you’re done with that click ‘Continue’ at the bottom and then change your ‘Format’ to 160×600′ and change your Ad colors from

Incase you’re wondering, the 0’s in the picture are zeroes. You can even select ‘Save as new Palette’ because we’re going to be using these same colors for most of the ads we’re going to place on your page. This way, you’ll be able to quickly select the same colors again rather than having to type out the color codes each time (The # sign and then the 6 Letters and Numbers correspond with a color in computer language). You should be using the one in the picture above and to the right. After this, just scroll all the way down and select ‘continue’ again, don’t play with any of the other options on this particular page. Now you should be at the ‘channel’ selection area, from here you can use channels to better keep track of how well each of your ads are performing, but for now we’re going to ignore this step. You can read more about ‘Channels in Adsense’ over at the advanced techniques section. Just click ‘continue’ again at the bottom of the screen. Now, finally select ‘Submit and Get Code’. Tada, you have your first Adsense code, Don’t close this window! All you need to do now is to get this onto your site! Here’s how:

Now remember that Bluesense folder you extracted to your desktop that I told you not to delete? This was back when you uploaded the new design to your site using Filezilla. You’re going to need to go make some changes to a few of the files in that folder and then re-upload the entire folder to your site again using FileZilla, so go back to that folder and open it up. Inside of the BlueSense folder should look something like this:

BluesenseFolder

In this folder we’re going to have to edit the following files and put our ads in them; single_top_adverts.php, single_bottom_adverts.php, sidebar.php, menu.php, and header_adverts.php so let’s get started. Firstly, Right click sidebar.php and click ‘edit with notepad++’ and then find the following location:

Notepad ++

You see the place where it says <!– Put Adsense 160×600 Code Below here –> and the one that says above it, you’re going to copy and paste the code that Adsense gave you back where I told you to ‘keep this window open’. Now All you need to do is highlite the adsense code in there, as this isn’t your code, it’s someone else s and paste over it with YOUR code that you recieved in te earlier part of this tutorial. Simple huh? Great. When you did this, make sure to click Ctrl+S to save this file, or just go to file->save and then X out the sidebar.php , we’re done with it for now. Now you need to open the menu.php file in Notepad++ and do the same exact thing. Place the same code that Adsense gave you ontop of the current adsense code in that particular file. Both of these slots required a 160×600 code, so you need to use the same code as before, but for the next part, we need you to grab a 468×60 code from adsense, so go back to Adsense.com and click Adsense Setup  -> Adsense for Content again and once again set it to Text only and click continue, then select 468×60 instead of 160×600 in the ‘format’ area. Now set up the colors the exact same way as we setup the colors for the previous code and then click next next next until you Adsense gives you the code. Take this code and open up the single_top_adverts.php with Notepad++ again paste it ontop of the current Adsense code already in there. Okay, we’re almost done, I swear, we’re going to need to get a new adsense code again, this time for a 336×280 Adsense code and we’re going to put it in the single_bottom_adverts.php. Okay Done? good. We’re going to need to do this ONE last time, but this time it’s going to be a tad different. Go to adsense.com again and click Adsense Setup, but instead of ‘Ad Unit’ select ‘Link Unit’ and set it to ‘5 links per unit’ and make the format 728×15. This time make the colors for ‘links’ FFFFFF and make the border and background 064B8C as seen in the picture below:

Adsense Link Units

and now copy that ‘Link Code’ to the ‘header_adverts.php’ file and replace the current code in there with your code like you did with the other files. After this you’re done and you’re ready to reupload the BlueSense theme to your site with all of the added revisions. MAKE SURE TO CLICK CTRL+S or File -> Save after you replaced all the Adsense codes in the files with your own Adsense Codes before you proceed to the next step!

In case you’re wondering, The only difference between an Ad Unit and a Link unit is that they’re different types of ads. The difference between the two are illustrated below:

Link and Ad units

We now need to re-upload the Bluesense folder to the ‘Themes’ folder using Filezilla. If you forgot how to get there just head back over to the ‘Updating Your Wordpress Theme‘ Section of the guide to Refresh your memory. After this, you’re done with this part of the guide! It may take up to 10 minutes for your ads to start appearing on your site, so be patient after you do finally re-upload your Bluesense folder through FileZilla.
